Spotlight on our Community: "It Ain't Necessarily So!: The Surprising Jewish Influence on American Jazz," Lev Mallinger discusses the influence of Jews, when shut out of many professions, on American music, especially Jazz
Sunday, January 21, 2018 • 5 Shevat 5778
10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
In the early part of the 20th Century, when Jews were shut out from countless professions, many musicians (including Benny Goodman, Stan Getz, Mel Torme, Artie Shaw, and Buddy Rich) brought their talents and Jewish experience to the field of Jazz. In fact, if you hum the opening measures of Ira Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So," you will quickly note how closely they resemble the beginning blessing for the Torah! Renaissance man and husband of our own Cantor Wendy Bat-Sarah, Lev Mallinger, will share his life-long passion for music as he discusses the important and overwhelming Jewish influence on American Jazz.
